By Richard Cumberland
titled De Legibus Naturae, first seemed in 1672
as a theoretical reaction to various concerns that came
together through the overdue 1660s. It conveyed a conviction
that technology may well supply a good capacity of
demonstrating either the contents and the obligatory
force of the legislations of nature. At a time while Hobbes’s
work looked as if it would recommend that the applying of
science undermined instead of supported the belief of
obligatory average legislations, Cumberland’s De Legibus
Naturae supplied a systematic rationalization of the natural
necessity of altruism.
Through his argument for an ethical legal responsibility to
natural legislations, Cumberland made a serious intervention in
the early debate over the function of average jurisprudence
at a second while the average legislations venture used to be widely
suspected of heterodoxy and incoherence.
