Der französische Klassiker der Soziologie, Pierre Bourdieu, gehört mit seiner Theorie der „herrschenden Klasse“ und seinem 1982 erschienenen Buch „Die feinen Unterschiede“ bis heute noch zur Pflichtlektüre der Forscher, die sich mit dem Thema Elite beschäftigen. Die Potsdamer Elitestudie von 1995 und die drei Mannheimer Elitestudien von 1968, 1972 und 1981, als Forschungsarbeiten, auf deren empirische Daten sich Wissenschaftler heute berufen, zeigen die Bedeutung dieses Themas für eine Gesellschaft, die sich im Laufe der letzten two hundred Jahre in wachsendem Maß ausdifferenziert hat, so dass eine eindeutige Aufteilung in soziale Schichten schwer fällt.
Von wesentlichem Interesse in diesem spezifischen Themengebiet ist neben der Frage nach den Charakteristika von Eliten diejenige nach dem Zugang zu diesen elitären Zirkeln: welche Voraussetzungen sind unabdinglich und - Jahrhunderte nach Feudalismus und Monarchie in Deutschland - welche Rolle spielt die soziale Herkunft?
